A Sad Goodbye and a Sweet Hello

There was a sense of comfort felt the minute you stepped into the dinning room of Terre a Terre before a course was served, before Chef Todd Villani came to the table to greet you, even before a glance at the menu. It started with the locally sourced decor, some from local artists, some treasures from the ruins of Hurricane Sandy and some that may be growing in your back yard. When you sat down, you felt at home.

TerreaTerre Top Meals

Champion of local sourcing nearly everything you see and taste, Todd Villani closed the doors of Carlstadts Terre a Terre. Not before making local a priority, and in the forefront of the New Jersey food scene, not before sharing his culinary creativity in seasonal menus that blended some well served favorites with unique ingredients and flavors, not before making Supper Clubs cool again, not before getting top ratings from the food press including the Star Ledgers Bucket list and not before making history at the James Beard House being a New Jersey chef and selling out his Garden State Bounty debut. But definitely before making one of the most powerful debuts of his life and that is the role of Dad. As this goes to press, the Villani's are expecting their first, a boy, due any moment.

But to quote Villani, this is not good bye, more like "see you later". His desire to be a "dad who is around" and his innate talent to create has lead to Villani partnering with Hudson Greene Market in Jersey City. Villani's new role includes in-home catering for any special event. Imagine Chef Todd catering in your kitchen. It is with tremendous gratitude and honor, I thank you Todd for giving me back stage passes into your kitchen. I await the news of your son's arrival and to both you and Beth Ann, enjoy the journey of parenthood. Thank you to your staff who always made me feel at home. Very special thanks to Auntie Lisa, I need to tell your story. Congratulations on this exciting new chapter in the story of your life.

That’s Why They Call Them The Blues

It's blueberry season across New Jersey as farmers markets are in blue-out mode. Jersey is the home of the blueberry capital of the world, Hammonton to be exact . While Blueberry Pie Oreos are actually a thing, we have uncovered six noteworthy noshes containing fresh jersey blues.

Great friends visionaries, and long time Taste of Montclair supporter Anthony's Cheesecake have a dessert line up like none other, but it did all begin with cheesecake. Anthony tops this incredibly sweet creamy delight with large juicy blues, a favorite atop a favorite. Keep them in mind for a wonderful Sunday Brunch experience as their Sunday hours just expanded.

We could not celebrate blueberries with out mentioning Jams By Kim. Of her many amazing jams, blueberry lemon is a staple favorite. Its a perfect blend of sweet blueberry and tart lemon and can accompany everything from cakes and muffins to grilled flatbreads and crackers. You can find Kim "jamming" at Montclair, Rutgers Gardens. and Summit Farmers Markets each week.

Another, so hot its cool, blueberry treat comes from another Taste of Montclair supporter Gelotti. In the gelato case, you will find blueberry balsamic bursting with fresh blueberry flavor complemented by the balsamic edge and swirled into creamy gelato. No need to read anymore. Get to Gelotti in Caldwell and Montclair.

Hot off the presses and due for release this week, our friends Black Tie And Flip Flops broke the news today that Asalt & Buttery is introducing blueberry French macarons with blueberry preserve filling. Maureen's macs are the best, made with the best natural ingredients. Find these and more wonderful flavors on Bloomfield Avenune in Caldwell daily.

Finishing up best in "blue", Black Tie And Flip Flops, raconteur in chief John Lee shares his Blueberry Balsamic Sauce with Maple and the recipe is right here .

As summer continues to roll in, enjoy those blues while they are here fresh and in stock. Local farmers markets are always the best place to get them, and shopping local is always best

We Are Gonna Tell New Jersey’s Best Kept Secret

June 16, 2016 - While the town of Dover hosts a diverse cuisine through out the city streets, some of the best Morris county has ever tasted is located in the train station parking lot. You read that right. For ten years Big D's Dogs served up natural casing "hot dog truck" hot dogs; but that is not all. After securing a year round permit from the town, the menu expanded and got very interesting. Donny Angelone brings authentic homemade Italian cooking to the train station, and it's more than worth the trip.

BigD dogs

Monday's special is meatball sandwiches. Angelone deals with two famous Morris county bakeries known for real Italian bread, insuring freshness daily. He loads an italian roll with his mother's recipe meatballs, known through out Essex county, giving your Nonna's best a challenge. They are so good they are guaranteed "the best meatball sandwich you ever had or its free". Not one customer asked for their money back.

Wednesday special is the "original" Italian hot dog. Real pizza bread filled with fried peppers, onions and potatoes or Angelone's signature hot potatoes. He says they are "Jimmy Buff style". Anybody that knows anything about Italian hot dogs knows they originated in Newark. Angelone brought them to Morris county and even years after, "pizza bread is a new concept for people here".

On Friday, Big D's serves sausage and pepper sandwiches made with pork sausage, vinegar peppers and onions and those hot potatoes on a fresh Italian roll. These specials sell out early and fast. The regular customers keep coming back.

So much more than just a dirty water dog truck, Angelone offers "the everything" dog with real cheddar cheese chili onions & sauerkraut. "IF stuff doesn't fall out, there ain't enough on it", Angelone says.

While quality ingredients and great homemade taste drives the business, its his loyal following that keeps the truck going. Return customers are a result of word of mouth, literally, as Angelone does not advertise and only recently started a Facebook page. The location serves many in the workforce that commute daily as well.

As amazing as the food is at Big D's, equally as amazing is Angelone's best pals who are always at the truck with him. On a sunny day 2 or 3 of the guys sit right in front of the truck in lawn chairs, some are inside with him. Some travel over a half hour to get there, some take them home to their families, but all of them are like brothers, and if the best meatball you ever had doesn't bring you back at least once, sitting with these guys will. Angelone wakes up every day doing what he loves to do, most of the time with the guys he hangs out with, supporting him. His customers are regulars, he knows them by name. You may be standing in front of food truck but you feel like dinner with the family.

Six “buds” That Rocked Taste of Montclair

Earlier this year Taste of Montclair filled The Manor with wonderful local cuisine, hungry patrons and generous donations to the tune of 30K supporting Montclair Rotary Club charities.
Over 50 vendors more than brought their A game, but it was their T game that won over guests. T for taste and lots of it. Here are some we have tried and tried again.

Its only right that long-time taste supporter and NJ's Founding Father of flavor, John Sauchelli's Jersey Barn Fire top the list with Black Garlic. Deep flavor with just enough heat to fire things up, this makes a great topper of just about anything from potatoes to macaroni & cheese, even ice-cream if you desire a creamy cool counter part to a zesty hot.

Red Velvet "kake" pops from Kimmy's Kakes were a hit. Sweet creamy kake wrapped in rich chocolate. These are beyond a treat, they are a sweet sensation. Kimmy's beautiful artfully designed kakes taste as great as they look. Same goes for cake pops & truffles. They come in many flavors but the red velvet raises the bar.

On the cooler side of sweet, we experienced blueberry basil sorbet from Gelotti, who not only Grand Opened in Montclair recently, but can be spotted at Yogi Berra Stadium at New Jersey Jackals home games. The fusion of sweet blueberry & basil is a perfect summertime..anytime treat.

gelotti A Torres

May we also suggest Yogic Chai of Montclair for a cool concoction, not just your average iced coffee either. The masters of Nitro Cold Brew Coffee began serving this coffee-ful brew for over a year now as large global brands are bringing theirs to market this month. An authentic Nitro Cold Brew is creamy and cool and is a perfect daytime /nighttime brew. The even cooler thing about Yogic Chai is their coffee/ chai cycle which operates all over Montclair.

On to some spicy smoky flavor, another Taste of Montclair treat debuting for the first time this year was Two Men And An Appetite's General Tso Meatballs. The blend of heat & sweet is a taste you may not expect on a meatball, but must try.

twomen generaltso meatballs

We finish up this mini Taste of Montclair tour we have to share a treat that is near and dear Jane Yagoda's famouns Tomato soup with basil. A Gardener's Kitchen " connects my love for delicious healthy food, beautiful photography and the serenity of the garden" says Yagoda. This velvety smooth soup marked sharply with basil transcends seasons, yep we would eat it in August and would definitely #feelthebasil.

These were just a sampling of this very special night Montclair Rotary puts together to support local charities. Thank you to John Lee for making every Taste event better than the last one and thank you to Anthony Torres for the amazing photography.

Montclair’s New Kid Has Been Around The Block

May 15, 2016 When Mike Guerriero's uncle said he was taking him to Gelotti, he didn't realize what "taking" actually meant. Next day he was dipping tartufos. At fourteen, at the end of his daily bike ride to work, he found his passion.
Gelotti's original location was Union Avenue in Patterson. Mike learned everything from running the business to making ice-cream, gelato and italian ice all while keeping the parking lot clean. He knew how to handle large crowds, special orders and even the paparazzi as a well known reality show filmed there.

Screen Shot 2016-04-02 at 9.30.11 AM

Later when the second location on Bloomfield avenue in Caldwell was in transition, Mike was the guy for the job. The store was bigger than the original; with Mike at the helm that large space had all the authenticity & quality of the Paterson location with a new look and a new plan. Customers from Paterson recognized him. The brand transcended the man and introduced the purple- haired, crazy cake decorator, Breanna Brito who makes works of art from handmade ice-cream & gelato. "Ice cream is just as culinary as food," Mike shares, and when you experience Nonna's Cheesecake or Tiramisu gelato you will agree. For the record, Nonna not only approved of Mike's gelato recreation of her recipe, she loved it. With great customer support, Mike wasted no time giving it right back to the community from supporting non-profits to allergy-free flavors delivered to the schools, even customer requests take the highest priority. The irony of the Caldwell location is that it was the original east coast location for Baskin Robbins, and set a precedent. Clearly Mike raises that bar daily.

When the question of who could fill a great spot just down the Ave in Montclair, Gelotti was easily the answer. Same great tradition, long-time loyal employees, great flavors, custom cakes and a grand opening celebration featuring Jack the Jackal from the New Jersey Jackals.

gelotti mont. grandopening

Gelotti is now available in Floyd Hall at Jackals home games and also sponsored the Montclair Film Festival staying open extra hours to feed film goers. So much to celebrate in Gelotti-land including some amazing flavors. Blueberry basil just blew us away at Taste of Montclair. A match made in, well gelato; maple bacon jam, a conglomerate effort with support from the great folks at Stuffed Burgers and a brand new flavor that is taking New Jersey by storm, basil chip, "mint chip's italian cousin that flew in for the summer".

gelotti basil chip

But you basil fans better get there soon, its a favorite and its going fast. If this hasn't made your mouth water and stomach wane for incredibly creamy gelato homemade ice-cream and italian ice you didn't read it right. Instead head to any of Gelotti's locations visit their website Facebook & instagram feeds, or our favorite tweet them. When you go there grab a picture and tag @NJGreats on twitter when you post.
