May 15, 2016 When Mike Guerriero's uncle said he was taking him to Gelotti, he didn't realize what "taking" actually meant. Next day he was dipping tartufos. At fourteen, at the end of his daily bike ride to work, he found his passion.
Gelotti's original location was Union Avenue in Patterson. Mike learned everything from running the business to making ice-cream, gelato and italian ice all while keeping the parking lot clean. He knew how to handle large crowds, special orders and even the paparazzi as a well known reality show filmed there.
Later when the second location on Bloomfield avenue in Caldwell was in transition, Mike was the guy for the job. The store was bigger than the original; with Mike at the helm that large space had all the authenticity & quality of the Paterson location with a new look and a new plan. Customers from Paterson recognized him. The brand transcended the man and introduced the purple- haired, crazy cake decorator, Breanna Brito who makes works of art from handmade ice-cream & gelato. "Ice cream is just as culinary as food," Mike shares, and when you experience Nonna's Cheesecake or Tiramisu gelato you will agree. For the record, Nonna not only approved of Mike's gelato recreation of her recipe, she loved it. With great customer support, Mike wasted no time giving it right back to the community from supporting non-profits to allergy-free flavors delivered to the schools, even customer requests take the highest priority. The irony of the Caldwell location is that it was the original east coast location for Baskin Robbins, and set a precedent. Clearly Mike raises that bar daily.
When the question of who could fill a great spot just down the Ave in Montclair, Gelotti was easily the answer. Same great tradition, long-time loyal employees, great flavors, custom cakes and a grand opening celebration featuring Jack the Jackal from the New Jersey Jackals.
Gelotti is now available in Floyd Hall at Jackals home games and also sponsored the Montclair Film Festival staying open extra hours to feed film goers. So much to celebrate in Gelotti-land including some amazing flavors. Blueberry basil just blew us away at Taste of Montclair. A match made in, well gelato; maple bacon jam, a conglomerate effort with support from the great folks at Stuffed Burgers and a brand new flavor that is taking New Jersey by storm, basil chip, "mint chip's italian cousin that flew in for the summer".
But you basil fans better get there soon, its a favorite and its going fast.
