New Jersey Firsts

Enough of “reality “ shows giving New Jersey a bad name! Here are some really interesting facts that have made the Garden State great:

November 20, 1789 New Jersey becomes the 1st state to ratify Bill of Rights

June 19, 1846 The world’s first ever organized baseball game was recorded and played on Hoboken’s Elysian Fields, known today as Elysian Park. Both teams were local; the Knickerbocker Club and the New York Nine.

November 6, 1869 the first intercollegiate football game ever was played at Rutgers campus. They won against Princeton.

1881 Submarine inventor John Holland takes first ever submarine ride in the Passaic River

January 19 , 1883 Thomas Edison builds the first electric lighting system employing overhead wires and begins service at Roselle, New Jersey.

September 7, 1921 The first Miss New Jersey Pageant is held in Atlantic City

July 25, 1946 Another Atlantic City first; Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis stage their first show as a comedy team in the infamous Club 500.

April 26, 1956 First container ship left Port Newark, New Jersey for Houston, Texas.

May 26,1998 The United States Supreme Court rules that Ellis Island, the historic gateway for millions of immigrants, is mostly located in New Jersey.

According to history, our nations liberty, two major American sports, scientific advancements, arts and entertainment all have roots right here in New Jersey. The list of innovators, educators and visionaries that hail from New Jersey is endless, and I bet not one of them went “tanning”.
